Horace was founded in 1886. The city is named after Horace Greeley of Chappaqua, New York, editor of the ''New York Tribune''.〔(【引用サイトリンク】 title=Profile for Horace, Kansas )〕 Greeley encouraged western settlement with the motto "Go West, young man".
A post office was opened in Horace in 1886, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1965.〔(【引用サイトリンク】 title=Kansas Post Offices, 1828-1961 )
